Pastor Jerry Cook discusses what it means to be counter culture on his radio segment “Politics and The Pulpit”.
Counter culture means that somebody wants to do everything opposite and different from a society they know.
For example, you may have wanted to do things completely opposite from the way your parents have done things when they were your age. The idea of counter culture began from about 1967 to the early 1907’s. Pastor Jerry Cook says there were not a lot of positives to the counterculture during that time.
“One thing I can say is there were a few things that they espoused as a counterculture in the late 70’s that I think is really interesting. First of all, they used to say this: ‘Question authority’. That was a big deal, especially when Nixon became President in 1960” – Pastor Jerry Cook on Politics and the Pulpit
Cook says that in today’s society, we do not question and we just comply.
Cook says it is a big problem because asking questions is a good thing, not a bad thing.

Another thing that the counterculture was known for was this notion of government being looked at suspiciously. Cook says today, there seems to be a wholesale belief in anything that the government says.
“I think for free-thinking individuals, it is important that we question what is coming out of Washington. Not everything Washington does is good. By the way, not everything it does is bad” – Pastor Jerry Cook on Politics and the Pulpit
Pastor Jerry Cook encourages his community to have their own free thinking and not comply with everything the government says. It is important to Pastor Jerry Cook for people to make their own decisions and opinions off of their own beliefs.
