In a news release distributed by the CHP Newhall station on Thursday, the California Highway Patrol’s Sacramento headquarters encouraged California motorists to designate sober drivers before the start of the big game.
“Drunk driving is completely avoidable, but continues to be a serious problem,” said CHP Acting Commissioner Warren Stanley in the statement. “We want motorists to remember that drinking and driving is a choice that can have catastrophic results.”
During last year’s Super Bowl, one person was killed in an alcohol-involved collision and 41 others were injured on California’s roadways, according to preliminary data from the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System.
There were also 247 arrests made during last year’s Super Bowl by the CHP for driving under the influence (DUI), according to officials.
“If you do plan on having a couple drinks during the game, have a designated driver, use Uber, use some other way than getting behind the wheel,” said CHP Newhall Officer Eric Priessman.
This news release came a day after the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station issued a similar statement advising Santa Clarita residents to plan ahead before Super Bowl Sunday.
“For many football fans, when it’s time for Super Bowl LII, everyone’s a fan…and ‘fans don’t let fans drive drunk,’” said Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station on Wednesday.
Both the CHP Newhall station and the SCV Sheriff’s Station have teamed up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for their “Fans Don’t Fans Drive Drunk” campaign.
