CHP To Conduct DUI Checkpoint Labor Day Weekend

Officers with the California Highway Patrol, (CHP) Newhall Area Office are set to conduct a DUI checkpoint in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County this Labor Day weekend.

The DUI checkpoint is scheduled to begin Friday around 8 p.m. and conclude at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.

“The location will be announced just prior to the operation,” Greengard said.

Motorists approaching the DUI checkpoint are expected to see informational signs advising them of a sobriety checkpoint ahead, according to Greengard.

Once diverted into the lane, motorists are expected to be detained only momentarily while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.

“The goal of the DUI Checkpoint is to create awareness among the motoring public, to deter people from driving under the influence, and to keep the streets safe for all,” Greengard said.

Although checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road, the CHP are expected to apprehend DUI drivers who fail to heed our warnings.

“Even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically, the psychological influence a checkpoint has on the motoring public is invaluable,” Greengard said.

Sobriety checkpoints are conducted in accordance to the guidelines for checkpoint operations outlined in the Supreme Court decision, Ingersol vs. Palmer.

“Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked,” Greengard said. “If traffic volume becomes too heavy, vehicles to be checked will be selected by a pre-set standard, such as every fifth or 10th vehicle, in order to assure objectivity.”

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
