Red Cross Prepares For Fire Season Peak In California

From the Lake, Bobcat and Martindale Fires locally to the fires in northern California, Red Cross Los Angeles has worked to respond and support affected communities while adjusting to regulated procedures due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

California has witnessed a record breaking fire season, with nearly 4 million acres burned throughout the state and the expected peak of fire season yet to come. The Red Cross stated in a press release their intent to monitor increasing Santa Ana winds and the warming and drying pattern expected for the month of October. The Red Cross is also placing volunteers on standby shifts.

Due to COVID-19, the Red Cross has worked to adjust shelter organization in accordance to safety protocols by placing those in need iin emergency hotel lodging when possible. If hotel stays are not possible, then the Red Cross will open traditional shelters. Additional precautions have also been implemented and special training developed for the Red Cross workforce.

While adhering to pandemic safety protocols, Red Cross workers have been distributing relief supplies with emergency response vehicles in neighborhoods affected by wildfires and where mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted. Residents still in need of assistance, can contact the Red Cross via the Disaster Distress Hotline at 800-675-5799.

Since the Bobcat Fire started on Sept. 6, the Red Cross has provided emergency lodging to more than 250 residents, more than 7,800 meals and snacks and provided more than 570 individuals with emotional and spiritual support.

More than 85 volunteers lended their support during the local Bobcat fire on Sept. 6 that affected a number of families.

The Red Cross stated there is a special need for volunteers to support sheltering efforts as October and November are recorded as the peak of fire season. Needed volunteer services include shelter reception, registration, meal distribution, sleeping arrangement, and information collection.
