Boys Basketball: CIF Southern Section Second Round Action Tonight

CIF SS Playoff Basketball

Division 2A

8 West Ranch (18-9) vs 9 Peninsula (18-11) at 7:00

Robbie Myers’ (21 points and 8 rebounds in first round win over Buena) ascension as the go-to scorer for the Wildcats in the second half of the season has helped West Ranch to a 9-2 record since  December 27th.

Their only losses? Twice against league champion Valencia.

Myers will need to be at his best offensively, as Peninsula allows only 51.5 points per game.

Division 2AA

14 Santa Monica (21-7) vs 4 Valencia (22-6) at 7:00

The last several weeks have seen Valencia pound the Foothill League during the week, only to be handled by some strong teams across Southern California on the weekends (losses to Poly, Colony, and Fairfax).

Tonight will go a long way in determining how much their tough non-league schedule will have prepared them for what they’ll face in this bracket. Not to mention, this will be a rematch of a Damien Tournament game on December 28th that Valencia won, 73-56.

This Vikings team is loaded with all the necessary components for a deep playoff run. Expect a big shot here and there from Jake Hlywiak, some big time feats of athleticism from Jayden Trower, and a steady dose of Richard Kawakami & Josh Assiff.

Division 3AA

6 Santa Clarita Christian (7-21) vs Citrus Hill (19-9) at 7:00

Unbothered by the forfeiture of eleven games this season, the Cardinals took care of business in the first round at Millikan with a 90-70 win. They continue their quest on the road tonight over 90 miles southeast down in Perris, CA.

SCCS has a balanced attack that seemingly anyone can be the star of on a given night, as it was senior Kevin Stone that went off for 27 points against Millikan. Stone, Justin Collins, or Caden Starr can get hot at any time, and the defending state Champions remain the team to beat until someone knocks them off.
