Canyon Drops Semifinals To Salesian In Overtime Thriller

Canyon’s bid for back-to-back championships came up just short after Salesian’s defensive stop in overtime of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIF-SS) Division 7 semifinals sealed the Mustangs’ win.

In the final 17 seconds of overtime, Salesian hit a pair of free throws to take a 61-58 lead. With only seconds remaining, the Cowboys launched multiple shots from beyond the arc in an attempt to force double overtime, but were unable to convert, falling 61-58.

“Credit to Salesian, they made a couple more plays than we did,” said Canyon Head Coach Ali Monfared. “I thought our guys left everything on the line and I’m really proud of them. It didn’t go the way we wanted, but we battled and that’s all I could ask of them.”

Isaac Yuhico was one of the difference-makers in the semifinal matchup, leading Canyon with 20 points.

“He’s been a fantastic leader,” said Monfared. “He’s really led this young team and I couldn’t be more proud to coach Isaac.”

Fellow seniors Adam Graham added 13 points, while Josiah Toledo finished with 16. The trio, along with the rest of the team, controlled much of the game, taking their first lead early in the opening quarter at 7-6 over the Mustangs.

Salesian tied the game at 46-46 with 2:46 remaining in regulation. The teams finished the fourth quarter knotted at 49-49, forcing overtime.

In the extra period, the Mustangs took their first lead since the first quarter at 51-49.

Canyon quickly responded with a three-pointer from Alex Lazo to regain the advantage, but Luke Sowby answered with a three-pointer of his own to give Salesian a 54-52 edge.

The teams traded baskets and were tied twice in overtime before Salesian converted the decisive free throws in the closing seconds to secure the victory.

Despite the loss, the Cowboys have already secured a CIF State playoff berth, which begins in March.

With the defeat still fresh, Monfared said the team will take time to process it before returning to practice, reviewing film, and preparing for the state postseason.
