Canyon Falls To St. Margaret’s In Final Minutes Of Quarterfinals

Canyon’s postseason run came to a heartbreaking end Wednesday night, as the Cowboys fell 50-47 to St. Margaret’s in a tightly contested CIF-SS quarterfinal matchup that was decided in the final minute.

The game opened at a deliberate pace. Canyon struck first, but St. Margaret’s answered quickly to tie it 2-2.

The Cowboys built an early 6-2 advantage before the Tartans chipped away.

St. Margaret’s grabbed its first lead at 8-6 late in the first quarter, and the period closed with St. Margaret’s narrowly in front, 9-8.

The back-and-forth battle intensified in the second quarter. Canyon reclaimed the lead at 10-9 off a pair of free throws and later pushed ahead 14-11.

The Cowboys’ largest lead of the night was four points, a margin they reached multiple times in the first half.

A key moment came when Darby Dunn knocked down a three-pointer to give Canyon a 21-18 edge. The Cowboys carried a slim 23-20 lead into halftime.

Dunn led the way with 13 first-half points, while Emily Hackett added six and Shannen Wilson contributed two.

Canyon continued to fight in the third quarter, highlighted by another three from Dunn that made it 26-22.

The Cowboys maintained a narrow lead until St. Margaret’s surged late in the period.

After trailing most of the quarter, the Tartans took their first lead since the opening frame at 31-30 and extended it to 35-30, their largest advantage of the night at five points. They entered the fourth quarter ahead 35-32.

In the final quarter, St. Margaret’s steadily protected its lead. Canyon trimmed the deficit to one possession multiple times, including 42-41 and 48-45 in the final minute. But the Tartans converted late free throws to seal the 50-47 victory.

Dunn finished with a team-high 24 points. Earlier this season, the sophomore eclipsed 1,000 career points, becoming the first girls player in Santa Clarita history to reach the milestone as a sophomore.

Canyon had dominated its first two playoff games by 15 or more points, but against St. Margaret’s, the Cowboys were unable to create separation in what proved to be a defensive grind.

“I think [St. Margaret] played really good defense and made it hard for Darby and Shannen. Great defense wins games,” said Canyon Head Coach Jessica Haayer.

Despite having just three seniors and a young core expected to return next season, Haayer felt the opportunity was there.

“Defense is my priority, and if they don’t want to play it and box out, you’re going to lose tight games like this one,” said Haayer.
