Both Joe Kelly and Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers were suspended by Major League Baseball (MLB) after Kelly threw a series of close pitches and taunted a batter during Tuesday’s game against the Houston Astros, prompting a heated confrontation between the two teams.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly received an eight-game suspension from the MLB, and manager Dave Roberts received a one-game suspension as the result of a large confrontation between the Dodgers and the Astros in the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s game.
Tuesday’s 5-2 victory for the Dodgers marked the first time that the team had faced the Astros since Houston was sanctioned by the MLB for illegally stealing catchers’ signs with the use of replay monitors. In turn, Astros players would warn their batters of an incoming pitch using a “trash-can banging scheme.”
Houston reportedly used this method during the 2017 season, which saw the Astros defeat the Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series.
In the sixth inning of Tuesday’s game, Kelly threw a fastball behind the shoulders and head of Astros batter Alex Bregman.
While he was visibly upset following the pitch, Bregman did not say anything, and proceeded to take first base.
After a grounder from Houston’s Michael Brantley forced Bregman out at second, an unidentified individual yelled at Kelly to “get on the mound motherf*cker,” as he had gone to cover first base.
Kelly then threw a curveball over the head of Houston’s Carlos Correa, and eventually struck him out. Cameras caught Kelly taunting Correa, saying “that-a-boy, nice swing,” while he made a series of faces.

Several heated words were exchanged between the two, leading to both teams’ benches to storm the field in a large confrontation.
While no physical contact was made between the two teams, the altercation was deemed significant enough by MLB officials to announce the suspensions of Kelly and Roberts.
Roberts is set to serve his suspension tonight, with Bob Geren serving as manager. Meanwhile, Kelly is currently appealing his suspension, making him available for play until a decision is made.
The Dodgers are scheduled to conclude their two-game series with the Astros tonight at 4:10 p.m.
