Former West Ranch quarterback Walker Eget put on a standout performance Friday night, throwing for three touchdowns and more than 300 yards in San Jose State University’s 35–28 win over Mountain West Conference rival New Mexico.
Eget completed 26 of 30 pass attempts for 334 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing four times for 17 yards.
The senior quarterback has completed 61.9% of his passes this season for 1,521 yards, with nine touchdowns and three interceptions through five games.
Friday’s win was a much-needed boost for a Spartans team that stumbled early in the season.
San Jose State lost two close games by a combined three points, falling 16-14 to Central Michigan in Week 1 and 30-29 to Stanford in Week 4. The team also suffered a 38–7 loss to top-10 Texas in Austin.
Their only win before the New Mexico game was a hard-fought 31–28 victory over Idaho.
With the victory, the Spartans improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They’ll look to even their record next week when they travel to Laramie to face Wyoming, a team also battling to keep its bowl hopes alive.
Eget will need to maintain his momentum heading into a challenging second half of the season. San Jose State faces four Mountain West opponents with winning records in its final seven games: Utah State (3–2), Hawaii (4–2), San Diego State (4–1), and Fresno State (4–1), the latter hosting the regular-season finale.
If Eget can replicate his performance against New Mexico, the Spartans have a chance to turn their season around.
