Only four Santa Clarita teams remain in the playoffs after the first two games of the CIF playoffs and look to make a push at a championship appearance.
The four teams still standing tall are the boys’ basketball teams for Castaic and Trinity Academy and West Ranch and Saugus’ girls’ basketball teams.
Castaic:
Despite coming dead last in the league for boys’ basketball, the Castaic Coyotes are the only boys’ team left after making their playoff debut as an at-large team in Division 5AA.
Castaic defeated California Lutheran 56-48 in the first round of the playoffs to win their first playoff game in program history.
The Coyotes kept the momentum going when they knocked off Montclair 55-41.
Castaic will have its hands full in the quarter-finals when they take on the 24-6 Godinez Fundamental Grizzlies.
On a 15-game winning streak, the Grizzlies have not lost since Dec. 27 and went undefeated in the Golden West League.
To take down the Grizzlies, the Coyotes must pull together to pick up a win against a team that has been a roll.
The game is set to be played on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
Trinity Classical Academy:
Also in the Division 5AA is the Knights, who are on a five-game hot streak.
To get their playoff run started, they defeated Redlands Adventist Academy 88-66 before taking down Westminster 65-59.
For a shot to play in the semi-finals, Trinity must go through El Segundo on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
Saugus:
In girls’ basketball, the Centurions won their first playoff game since the 2019-20 season by defeating Irvine 52-43 in the CIF Division 3AA playoffs opening round.
For the first time since the 2017-18 season, Saugus won two consecutive playoff games and, in the process, kept their five-game win streak and their playoff hopes alive.
The Centurions look to keep the streak alive when they take on the Torrance Tartars on Feb. 14 with tip-off at 7 p.m.
West Ranch:
In the first two wins of the playoffs, the Wildcats have come away with dominant wins.
West Ranch defeated the Patriot Warriors in the first round by a whopping 60-39.
Going into the next round, they kept their foot on the gas as they blew past Saint Joseph 46-25.
Now, the Wildcats are preparing to take on the Immaculate Heart Pandas in the Division 4A Quarter Finals on Tuesday at 7 p.m.,
