GSAC Announces Major Changes To Take Place Immediately

The historic Golden State Athletic Conference is saying goodbye to its former name while also welcoming three new schools in the process.

The GSAC acronym now stands for Great Southwest Athletic Conference, which represents the association’s new geographical realignment. The changes include three California schools leaving and three Arizona schools taking their place.

With the California schools being outnumbered 5-3, it made sense for a name change since less than half of the schools remaining were actually from the Golden State itself.

The departing schools are Vanguard University (CA), Menlo College (CA), and Jessup University (CA). Their vacant spots will be filled by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (AZ), Park University, Gilbert (AZ) and Benedictine University Mesa (AZ).

The schools that stayed are The Master’s University (CA), Hope International University (CA), Life Pacific University (CA), Arizona Christian (AZ) and Ottawa University Arizona (OUAZ)

The conference will also be switching to an updated logo after using the previous one for 16 years.

Numerous leadership changes are underway as well, “Dennis Tyner, President of OUAZ, who will serve as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the next two years.  Kevin Steele, Athletic Director at OUAZ, will serve as the Chair of the Administrative Committee composed of the league’s athletic directors,” according to a statement released by the conference.

Lucas Armstrong, former GSAC Assistant Commissioner, will also be stepping away after being with the conference since the summer of 2015. According to conference leadership, Armstrong’s replacement will be announced at a later date.
