West Ranch Defeats Saugus 28-0

West Ranch (4-2) pulls off yet another impressive win in the Foothill League after defeating Saugus (0-6) 28-0.

West Ranch running back Luke Deperno had a busy night rushing for two touchdowns in the first half alone.

Despite a strong finish to the game the Wildcats struggled early on.

“We had a few opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on but we’re going to try to fix those and focus on what we did well,” said West Ranch Head Coach Chris Varner.

On the first possession of the game West Ranch drove down the field to get stopped on fourth down in the red zone.

With Saugus backed up on their own 20 yard line they looked at their running back to get them out of trouble.

Due to a poor pitch Saugus fumbled the ball and the Wildcats recovered.

Despite already being in the red zone the Wildcats were forced to go for a field goal after a big third down sack from the Centurions.

To the Centurion’s luck the Wildcats bad fortune continued as they missed the field goal attempt.

On their next drive West Ranch found their rhythm and hammered the ball into the endzone off a Luke Deperno run to take a 7-0 lead.

Later in the second quarter Deperno would find the endzone once again to extend their lead 14-0.

When Saugus was in position to score the West Ranch defense showed up big with an interception from Zach Wyre.

The Wildcats offense said thank you to their defense by finishing the drive with a touchdown pass from Liam McDaniel to Wyre.

Going into the half, West Ranch was up 21-0 on Saugus.

In the third quarter both teams found themselves in a back and forth battle with no team able to find the endzone.

Eventually the Wildcats snapped that streak and McDaniel connected with wide receiver Andrew Hamilton in the endzone to pull ahead 28-0.

With less than five minutes left in the game a Saugus receiver took a brutal blow to the upper body that left him unable to get up.

Due to the severity of the impact paramedics were required on scene and the game was stopped with West Ranch up 28-0.

West Ranch is set to face off against Hart Friday Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. from Valencia High School.

Saugus will be on a bye week but will resume play Friday Oct. 6 against Hart at the College of the Canyons.
