With the lifting of the Stay-At-Home Order in California, certain high school sports will be allowed to resume athletic competitions in Los Angeles County, according to a release from the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State office on Monday.

With the lifting of the Stay-at-Home Order in Southern California last week, and as a purple tier sport, Boys and Girls Cross Country competitions were able to resume last week, according to the CIF.

“For the first time since mid-March, student-athletes were engaged in interscholastic athletic competition and those first steps were significant for all of us moving forward,” said Rob Wigod, CIF Commissioner of Athletics. “Congratulations to those who participated last week and best wishes to you as you continue on.”

In addition to allowing the return of Cross Country, the CIF also announced it was cancelling the 2020-2021 CIF Southern Section Traditional Competitive Cheer Championships scheduled for April 3, 2021, due to the COVID pandemic.

As of Monday the vast majority of counties in California, including Los Angeles County, still remained under the most restrictive purple tier of the state’s “Blueprint for a Safer Economy” reopening plan, which makes a return to certain sports still unlikely for the immediate future.

The state released updated guidelines for youth and recreational sports in mid-December, which included categorization of various sports into the four colored tiers applied to counties across the state based on their test positivity and adjusted case rates for COVID-19, as outlined in California’s “Blueprint for a Safer Economy” reopening plan.

Whichever tier a county falls under, determines which sports are permitted to compete.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) assessed risk level based on each sport’s level of contact and whether it is an indoor or outdoor sport.

The levels of contact were defined as follows:

• Low-Contact: Individual or small group sports where contact within six feet of other participants can be avoided. Some of these sports have relatively low exertion rates that allow for consistent wearing of face coverings when within six feet of other people.

• Moderate-Contact: Team sports that can be played with only incidental or intermittent close contact between participants.

High-Contact: Team sports with frequent or sustained close contact (and in many cases, face-to-face contact) between participants and high probability that respiratory particles will be transmitted between participants. Indoor sports are higher risk than outdoor sports due to reduced ventilation.
