2016 Rio Olympic Games
USA Swimming
Anthony Ervin’s story is one to go down in US Olympic lore. The Hart grad won the men’s 50m freestyle Gold medal in the Sydney games 16 years ago (at 19) and has now come full circle in his swimming career to capture Gold in the same event as the oldest individual swimmer to do so.
Ervin famously retired from the sport in 2003 before making a comeback at the London Games in 2012. He then proceeded to go a perfect 2-for-2 in his Rio events.
Ervin’s 21.40 second sprint narrowly edged the second place time of 21.41 and is much quicker than the 21.98s time he won Gold for in Sydney.
Abbey Weitzeil came up short in the women’s 50m free semifinals, posting a 24.67s time and did not earn a medal in her individual events.
However, the Canyons Aquatics Club star was in great form on the relay teams, taking home Gold in the 4 x 100 medley relay and Silver with the 4 x 100 freestyle team.
Track & Field
Allyson Felix is in Lane 4 in the women’s 400 meter Final at 6:45 pm.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers (66-52) dropped two of three to the Pirates over the weekend and sit one game back of the Giants for the NL West lead.
Today is an off day, and LA is in Philadelphia Tuesday for a date with the Phillies.
Los Angeles Rams
Nearly 90 thousand people showed up for the Rams first preseason game of 2016 and first football back in Los Angeles since Todd Gurley and Jared Goff were infants.
Goff looked like a rookie in his first professional football action (4-for-9, 1 INT), and if the regular season started next Sunday Case Keenum would be the starter. Goff would have to improve at a rapid pace within the next three weeks to be ready by Week 1. Hopefully they don’t put him out there until he is fully ready.
That being said, the fans were treated to a late comeback by 3rd string QB Sean Mannion. Former Westlake High School standout and PAC-12 all-time leading receiver Nelson Spruce caught a fourth quarter touchdown to trim the lead to 3 points, then Mannion hit Aaron Green for a touchdown with under 2 minutes to play for the 28-24 victory.
Back to UC Irvine for the Rams, who host the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday.
