Santa Clarita High School Boys Basketball
Valencia dropped their first two games of the season in the Simi Valley Tournament this past weekend, falling to La Salle 57-50 on Friday and to host Simi Valley 54-49 on Saturday. The 2-2 Vikings gear up for the annual SFV Invitational next weekend.
Golden Valley took a 31-25 lead to halftime against Crespi, but unraveled in the second half Friday to go down 69-58 in their final game of the Sierra Canyon Invitational. The Grizzlies are 3-3 on the season.
Trinity has struggled out of the gate to a 1-6 start this season after a stellar 2015/16 team that graduated most of the key contributors.
After the Knights’ first win Thursday over Fillmore, they lost back-to-back games Friday and Saturday to Channel Islands and Foothill Tech.
Santa Clarita High School Girls Basketball
It was an exciting weekend for SCV girls basketball, with an all-Foothill League Burroughs Tournament final on Saturday night between the Valencia Vikings and Canyon Cowboys. The rivalry game championship was as tough as could be.
Valencia led 39-30 after three quarters, but Canyon mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter and came up one point short, a 46-45 tournament victory for the 8-2 Vikings.
Canyon (6-4) proved it will be a serious contender in the Foothill League this season.
Both teams have an imposing player in the middle with Kayla Konrad averaging 16.6 points and 12 rebounds on the season for the Vikings and Rachel Bowers posting a shade under 13 points a game and 10 boards. Early Player of the Year favorites.
Golden Valley closed the Burroughs Tournament on a high note in the consolation bracket with wins over Paraclete and Cleveland to move to 4-3 on the season.
Also in the Burroughs Tournament, West Ranch finished 2-3 in the Burroughs Tournament, losing the last two games to Foothill Tech and Genevieve. The Wildcats sit at 2-7.
Lastly, Hart lost the first three in the Burroughs but ended on a high note with a win over Thousand Oaks. The Indians are 3-6.
Trinity outscored its final two Northeast Valley Tournament opponents 104-26 over the weekend to improve to 4-1. Senior Taylor Oshiro leads the Knights early on with 17.4 points per game.
Santa Clarita Christian is also off to a hot start out of the Heritage League with a 48-34 win over Desert Christian on Friday to keep the Cardinals undefeated at 4-0. They’ll play Santa Clarita rival Albert Einstein Academy on Friday.
Santa Clarita High School Boys Soccer
Golden Valley earned its first win of the season Friday with a 1-0 home shutout of Chatsworth.
Saugus had a solid showing in the Brandt Tournament with a 2-2 draw against Van Nuys and a 2-1 win over Polytechnic. The Centurions are currently 3-2-1.
On the other hand, Canyon struggled against Polytechnic in a 1-0 loss, but picked up its first point of the season with a 2-2 draw against Van Nuys. The Cowboys are 1-5-1.
Santa Clarita High School Girls Soccer
West Ranch outscored Crossroads and Peninsula by a combined 6-0 Saturday in the South Torrance Tournament to improve to 3-2-1 on the season.
The much-improved Golden Valley Grizzlies competed hard on Saturday as well, coming back from a 1-0 first half deficit to beat Paramount, and losing on a late goal to Cerritos, 2-1 for their first loss of the season. GV is 3-1-2.
Canyon is still looking for its first win after a 1-0 loss to Millikan and a 1-1 tie with Polytechnic in the Best in the West Showcase. The Cowboys are 0-3-1.
Hart drew 1-1 with perennial Division 1 power Aliso Niguel in the Aliso Cup to keep the Indians unbeaten in their last four games. Monday, Hart Arcadia at home. Kickoff is at 3:15.
TMU Basketball
Both Mustangs basketball teams were in Arizona to take on Arizona Christian in GSAC play.
The Mustangs’ men emerged victorious, 84-79, to move to 8-1 and 1-1 in conference play. Five players scored in double figures.
The Mustangs women failed to make it a sweep, falling 78-68 and 0-2 in the GSAC. The Mustangs go into the Holiday break at 6-3.
Los Angeles Rams
Breaking news from the Los Angeles Rams Monday. Following an embarrassing 42-14 home loss to Atlanta on Sunday, Rams owner Stan Kroenke made the decision to fire head coach Jeff Fisher.
“Making a decision such as this – especially during the season – is one of the most difficult in sports,” said Rams Owner/Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke. “I have great respect for Jeff as a coach, person, father and friend.”
According to Rams insider Myles Simmons, Rams COO Kevin Demoff will speak with the media at 3 pm today.
Los Angeles Lakers
The slumping Lakers lost their fifth straight game Sunday, 118-112 at home to the New York Knicks.
LA was unable to stop Porzingis (26 points and 12 rebounds) or Rose (12-for-16 for 25 points).
No rest for the weary, as the Lakers are in Sacramento tonight on a back-to-back against DeMarcus Cousins and the Kings. Tip-off is at 7:30.
