CIF Division II State Girls Basketball Championships

The Valencia Vikings are in the midst of the longest winter sports season in recent memory for a Santa Clarita Valley school. The baseball and softball seasons have been in play for over two weeks. Head coach Jerry Mike’s team has been on the hard court since late November.

Valencia slipped past Chaminade by one point over the weekend for its seventh straight postseason victory, and are now just three more W’s away from being crowned State Champions.

But tonight they face their stiffest challenge all season. Tonight, it’s a classic public school/private school battle. Tonight, the Vikings head to Santa Ana to battle California perennial athletics powerhouse Mater Dei in the Regional Semifinals.

Even in what would be considered a “down” year for the Mater Dei Monarchs (they haven’t lost more than seven games this decade until this season’s 22-8 record), they’ve still put together a deep tournament run as an At-Large 2-seeded team in D2.

Mater Dei has the size to give Valencia problems inside, and the in-form Kenadee Honaker will have her work cut out for her. With that being said, no one has been able to stop Kayla Konrad this season, and she’ll have to have a career game in a hostile environment.

6 Valencia (29-5)

2 Mater Dei (22-8)
