Santa Clarita High School Baseball

Improbable but not impossible.

That’s what West Ranch‘s impressive run to a share of the Foothill League crown was. Average during stretches in the middle of the season, the Wildcats found their form in April, going on to win 14 of 15 games.

While Valencia was the most consistent team throughout the season, the story will undoubtedly read as the Vikings’ slip at the end.

However, yesterday’s game was fit for a Championship. Wildcats workhorse starter Timmy Josten went the distance, allowing three runs and striking out six and the Wildcats did just enough on offense to grab a run in the sixth inning for the 4-3 victory.

Both West Ranch and Valencia finish with 11-4 records as co-champions.

Hart (10-5) scored nine runs in the fifth inning to bust the Cowboys (3-12) 4-3 lead and spoil senior day for Canyon. Danny Cervantes hit two doubles and drove in three runs for Hart.

The Cowboys end the season on a six-game losing streak and the Indians on a four-game winning streak.

Saugus (9-6) made its final case for an at-large playoff bid, downing Golden Valley (1-14), 12-3. Freshman Tony Jacob, Jr smacked a 3-run double and Jacob Lopez earned the win with eight strikeouts in six scoreless innings.

Much like in baseball, the Foothill League will be shared in softball as well. Valencia and Saugus are co-champions after tying at the top with 9-1 records.

Valencia (9-1) sent Hart (1-9) to the league cellar with an 8-1 victory.

Saugus (9-1) gave Canyon’s (4-6) bid for an at-large playoff berth a hit after a narrow 3-1 win.

Kennedi Sorensen drove in three runs to help the West Ranch Wildcats (5-5) lift their season two a third-place finish.

Santa Clarita High School Boys Volleyball

It was an even match between Valencia and Royal, exchanging games before a fifth and final set was needed to determine a winner.

There, the Vikings separated themselves for a 15-7 win in Game 5 to take it, 3-2.

No problem at all over at West Ranch where the Wildcats handled Hillcrest with ease, 3-0.

Saturday’s CIF-SS Division 2 Quarter-Finals:

Valencia (18-20) vs Burroughs (26-5) at 2:00

South (25-9) vs West Ranch (29-6) at 7:00

COC Softball

It’s the biggest day in the year for the Canyons Cougars. The CCCAA Super Regionals begin at Santiago Canyon College Friday, and No. 6 Canyons will face No. 3 Mt. San Antonio College.

It’s a double-elimination competition with the final four teams from each Super Regional (two in Southern California and two in Northern California) left standing to compete in the State Finals.

No. 6 COC vs No. 3 Mt. SAC at 4:00

Los Angeles Dodgers

Clayton Kershaw (5-1, 1.74 ERA) was dominant in the series finale against the Mets on Thursday night.

The Dodgers’ ace went the distance, surrendering only three hits while fanning thirteen for a 5-0 win. It was the eight time in Kershaw’s career that he’s pitched a complete game with double-digit strikeouts.

Los Angeles (18-17) continues its homestand Friday with a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Ross Stripling seeks his first win of the season tonight at 7:10, and you can listen live to the game on AM-1220 KHTS.
