Santa Clarita High School Football

The opening week of Foothill League play saw a road upset, a message sent to the league, and a team remaining undefeated through six games for the first time in over a decade.

Valencia (4-2, 1-0) sent a message to the rest of the league at home against Hart (4-2, 0-1) that the reigning league champions are still the team to beat in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Valencia bullied Hart into six turnovers, converting five touchdowns and all 35 of its points off of the Indians’ mistakes en route to a 35-14 thumping. Sophomore Jayvaun Wilson scored on two rushing touchdowns (six on the season) and intercepted Nick Moore to set up another score.

Saugus (6-0, 1-0) proved that Golden Valley (4-2, 0-1) still has a long way to go to compete with the top half of the Foothill League in a 21-9 silencing of the Grizzlies at Cougar Stadium.

Nate Eldridge, Gary Bojorquez and Quinn Sheaffer each scored rushing touchdowns and the Centurions defense stopped the Grizzlies on a goal line stand to secure the win.

West Ranch (4-2, 1-0) held on at Canyon (4-2, 0-1) for a big 28-27 road victory thanks in large part to the Cowboys’ decision to go for a 2-point conversion after scoring with under 30 seconds to play in regulation to win the game. The attempt failed, and Canyon then recovered an onside kick but ran out of time to get down the field.

Both teams received big games from their running backs. Canyon’s Brian Deveraux going for 243 total yards and two touchdowns and the undoubted player of the game for West Ranch, Jake Rice, who went for over 300 yards and scored all four touchdowns for the Wildcats.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for Canyon and the win makes West Ranch the second-hottest team in the league behind Saugus with a three wins in a row.

TMU Soccer

Men’s soccer lost in double overtime 2-1 to William Jessup on Saturday, the Mustangs’ third overtime game in four conference matches (1-2 in those games). They are 2-2 in GSAC play and 7-4-1 overall.

In the afternoon match, the women’s soccer team played WJ through two OT periods to a 0-0 draw. The Mustangs outshot the home team 14-6, eight of which were on target, but couldn’t find the back of the net. They are 1-2-1 in GSAC play and 5-4-3 overall.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers are back at Chavez Ravine Monday having accomplished the road-team goal of earning a split with the Washington Nationals.

The NLDS is even at 1-1 thanks to a 4-3 Game 1 victory on Friday and 5-2 Game 2 loss on Sunday.

COREY SEAGER: the Dodgers rookie shortstop and MVP candidate has hit home runs in each of the first innings of the postseason.

Monday, the Dodgers have a playoff matinee at Dodger Stadium. Kenta Maeda is on the mound to face Gio Gonzalez, in his first start against the Nationals.

Los Angeles Rams

Case Keenum and the Rams offense once again took a step backward, and LA’s three-game winning streak was snapped by the Buffalo Bills in a 30-19 loss at home, Sunday.

Keenum had an overall passer rating of 68.1 with two interceptions. And when a defense doesn’t have to respect the threat of the pass? More eight and nine defenders around the line of scrimmage to stop Todd Gurley. Gurley’s 3.1 yards per carry average in the game 27 ypc on the season is evidence to that.

On the other side of the ball, the absence of injured defensive linemen Robert Quinn, Michael Brockers and William Hayes proved to be too tough for the defensive unit as they let LeSean McCoy as they let him loose for 150 yards on 18 carries.
