Saugus cruised to an easy win over West Ranch, Canyon gutted it out against Golden Valley for a win and Valencia rebounded from a loss in their league home opener with a win over Hart. For all the scores from Thursday’s slate of Foothill League basketball, see our Thursday night scoreboard post.

Girls Soccer

Hart (13-1-2, 2-0) continued their winning ways with a dominant 5-1 road win over Valencia (4-5-2, 0-1-1) on Thursday. Hart has proven that they are the team to beat this season in the Foothill League.

Canyon (1-4-2, 1-1) picked up their first win of the season on Thursday against Golden Valley (4-5-1, 0-2) by a score of 2-1. Despite a slow start to the season, the Cowboys refuse to go to the bottom of the pack in the league standings.

Saugus (6-3-2, 1-1) notched their first league win with a 2-1 win over West Ranch (5-6-2, 0-1-1) Thursday afternoon. Goals from seniors Emily Barbour and Shaina Berdin were able to propel the Centurions over the Wildcats.

Tuesday Night Matchups:

  • West Ranch @ Valencia at 5 p.m.
  • Canyon @ Hart at 3:15 p.m.
  • Saugus @ Golden Valley at 3:15 p.m.

Boys Soccer

Both Hart’s boys and girls soccer teams have been dominant this year, but Valencia (3-2-3) managed to play the Indians (11-1-1) to a draw on Thursday, 1-1. The tie keeps the door open for the Vikings and ends the possibility of a sweep of their league opponents for a Hart team that has been explosive to this point in the season.

Another match was played to a 1-1 draw across town when West Ranch (2-4-2) went on the road to take on Saugus (6-4-1) Thursday. It’s been an up and down season for both teams, but they were evenly matched that day.

Golden Valley (7-4-1) picked up a 2-1 league win in their Thursday home matchup against Canyon (6-7). The Grizzlies and Cowboys remain in the middle of the pack in the Foothill League along with Saugus, as each hopes to emerge as a challenger to Hart for the league title.

Golden Valley travel to face Saugus for Tuesday’s lone match, while each of the Thursday matchups can be seen below:

  • Hart @ West Ranch at 3:15 p.m.
  • Saugus @ Canyon at 5:00 p.m.
  • GV @ Valencia at 6:30 p.m.

College of the Canyons

Men’s Basketball: The Cougars (7-7) dropped their conference home opener to Santa Monica City College (12-4) in a 75-69 loss. They now go on the road for an opportunity to pick up their first conference win when they travel to face LA Valley College (12-3) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Women’s Basketball: Canyons (7-8) won their second game in a row in a close 66-65 win over Santa Monica City College (7-9). The Cougars will look to extend their conference win streak on the road Wednesday against LA Valley College (7-9) at 5 p.m.

The Master’s University

Men’s Basketball: The Mustangs (14-3) have entered a two-game slide after their Saturday night loss on the road to Menlo College (8-6) by a score of 76-87. It has been a tough road stand for Master’s, and they’ll have one more challenge before they get to return to their home court when they go on the road to face 11th-ranked Westmont College (17-1) on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Basketball: Master’s (18-0) has continued to prove themselves to be an absolute juggernaut this season, as they continued their unbeaten season with a 72-54 win Saturday night against 22nd-ranked Menlo College. The Mustangs’ season will be defined by their next two matchups as they face two of the toughest opponents of the season, fourth-ranked Westmont College (13-2) and fifth-ranked Vanguard University (10-2). That slate kicks off on the road at Westmont Saturday, Jan. 18 at 5:30 p.m.

Valencia Flyers

The Flyers finally returned home to the Ice Station last Thursday for a match against division rival Las Vegas Thunderbirds. Valencia put up a good fight for most of the game, but their defense faltered in the third period, allowing three unanswered goals to score, and they were ultimately defeated by Las Vegas 6-1. The Flyers then hosted another western division nemesis San Diego Sabers for a three-game weekend series. On Friday, the score was tight after two periods in a high offense back-and-forth struggle, but the Sabers pulled away in the final frame to take a 7-4 victory. Flyers forward Lucas Demsar had a good two-goal night in the losing effort. The Flyers were on the wrong end of a 9-2 blowout against the Sabers on Saturday, as their defense completely fell apart in the second and third periods. San Diego swept the series by defeating the Flyers 6-2 on Sunday evening, once again dominating the latter two periods.
