Santa Clarita Student-Athletes Return To Conditioning

Student-athletes from each of the seven high schools of the William S. Hart Union School District were allowed to return to campus for conditioning workouts on Monday.

On Monday, Sept. 21, Canyon, Castaic, Golden Valley, Hart, Saugus, Valencia and West Ranch high schools were permitted to begin workouts under certain conditions outlined by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

The sports permitted to come back under the “Return to Play” workouts are those identified by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) as fall sports, including football, cross-country,  competitive cheer and boy’s and girl’s volleyball.

Workouts are limited to conditioning only and are to be held outdoors in small five to ten person pods with social distancing of eight feet or more during strenuous activity.

Players must also submit to self-certification screenings each day, which is essentially a brief questionnaire to identify any potential exposures to the coronavirus.

Coaches and players are expected to practice regular hand washing or sanitizing and to wear cloth face coverings when not engaged in an activity.

Additionally, players and coaches are not permitted to share equipment including passing a ball between two or more people and access to weight rooms remains off-limits.

“The league wants to support the wellness of our student-athletes by providing fitness and conditioning opportunities that fit within the LADPH protocol,” said Dr. Mariane Doyle, director of Human Resources, Equity Services and Athletics at the Hart District.

As of now, visitors and spectators are barred from attending the workouts.

If the protocols put forth are successfully implemented with fall sports, spring sports are expected to follow suit in the future.
