Saugus, Trinity Fall In Respective CIF-SS Semifinal Games

Both the Saugus and Trinity Classical Academy baseball programs saw their postseason runs come to an end in their respective CIF-SS semifinal matchups, falling just short of championship appearances.

For Saugus, the semifinal marked a second chance at reaching the finals after initially losing 2-1 to Rio Mesa High School in the quarterfinals. However, Rio Mesa later forfeited due to a CIF-SS violation, allowing the Centurions to advance.

Despite the unexpected opportunity, Saugus was unable to capitalize, falling 3-2 to Glendora High School in a tightly contested game.

The Centurions struck first in the third inning when Saugus Athlete of the Year Matt Long launched a two-run home run, also driving in University of Wisconsin-Stout commit Joey Nuttall.

Saugus held the Tartans scoreless until the sixth inning when Santiago Garza delivered a home run along with two additional runs by John Seader and Riley Cooper to give Glendora a 3-2 lead.

The Tartans held on from there to secure a spot in the CIF-SS Division 4 championship game, scheduled for Saturday at Cal State Fullerton against Laguna Beach High School.

Meanwhile, Heritage League champion Trinity Classical Academy traveled to Brentwood School on Tuesday afternoon for the CIF-SS Division 6 semifinals, where the Knights were shut out 8-0.

Brentwood pitcher Jack Kaplan threw a complete game, allowing just three hits while striking out 10 batters.

Offensively, Brentwood took control early with a five-run second inning before adding three insurance runs in the sixth.

With the win, Brentwood School advanced to the CIF-SS Division 6 championship game against Covina High School on Friday at Cal State Fullerton.
