Santa Clarita Christian School (SCCS) dropped to 0-4 following a loss to Fresno Christian Saturday afternoon, but even in defeat, there was a silver lining.
The Eagles dominated the first half, putting up 52 points. Quarterback Tycen Ramirez connected with Bryce Smith 12 times, with Smith scoring six touchdowns and totaling 232 receiving yards.
SCCS managed 14 points in the first half. Trailing by a wide margin, the Cardinals came out stronger in the second half, allowing only 16 points while adding 18 of their own.
SCCS Head Coach Austin Fry credited the offense for stepping up after halftime, stating, “An effective offense can be a good defense.”
Fry also noted that Dax Woodward gave the team a much-needed spark after entering the game in the second quarter.
“We have had our starting QB out all year and weren’t sure if we were going to need to debut him in this game,” Fry said. “Once he came in, it sparked a little life, and then we were able to gain momentum through the air and on the ground.”
Despite the loss, the silver lining was Woodward’s return and the 32 points scored, SCCS’s highest-scoring game of the season to date.
“The run game, when assignments were clear, was working well,” Fry added. “That allowed us to throw the ball downfield easier as well, which hit for a few huge gains.”
Having one key piece back is a boost for the Cardinals, who have struggled with injuries this season. In their second game against Avalon, 11 players were unavailable.
Caleb Shaffer, Caleb Arnold, Cash Gibson, Cam Metro, and Jonah Babikan were all standouts in the matchup.
SCCS will be on the road for its final non-league game Friday against Chadwick, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.
