The Valencia girls basketball program (22-4, 10-0) remained undefeated in the Foothill League with a dominant win over West Ranch (19-8, 4-7) on Friday night during the Vikings’ senior night.
Senior Cara McKell led the game with 18 points in Valencia’s 69-30 win over the Wildcats. McKell, a four-year varsity player, also added seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

“[McKell] is always really consistent getting to the hoop, getting to the foul line, knocking down outside shots when she has the opportunity,” said Valencia head coach Jared Honig. “We just know we can count on her to be physical on both sides and help lead us to victory.”
Right in the mix of the celebration was upcoming freshman Sophia Sarkar, who has been making a name for herself this season. Sarkar finished with 13 points, four steals, and two assists.

“She plays with a lot of maturity, like beyond her freshman year. She’s a really experienced player from before she got here,” said Honig. “So it’s nice that she fit in so nicely and led the way. She takes care of the ball, she hits big shots and always plays tough defense.”
The production from McKell, Sarkar, and the rest of the team was evident early, as the Vikings jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the first quarter. That advantage was short-lived, however, as the Wildcats rallied to pull within one point at 9-8.
West Ranch’s push was fueled largely by Maia Garrison, who led the Wildcats with 15 points.
As quickly as the Wildcats closed the gap, Valencia responded with a 13-point run to take a 21-8 lead heading into the second quarter. The Vikings carried that momentum into the second quarter, extending their lead to 36-17 by halftime before closing out the game with a 69-30 victory.
With the win, Valencia secured at least a share of the Foothill League title.
“It’s really exciting – that’s one of our goals this year, before playoffs, is to be league champs again,” said Honig. “So to hear at least a share tonight is exciting. Hopefully next week we’ll take care of business and be out right league champs this year.”
The Vikings will play their next game on Monday, February 2, at 5 p.m. on the road against Canyon. West Ranch will wrap up its regular season on Wednesday, hosting Hart at 5 p.m.
