Both West Ranch softball and Trinity Classical Academy baseball saw their postseason runs come to an end in the opening round of the CIF Southern California Regional Tournament.
Coming off a tough loss to St. Bonaventure in the CIF-SS Division 5 Championship, the West Ranch Wildcats entered the Division 3 regional bracket looking for redemption.
Facing off against the Olympian Eagles, the Wildcats battled to the final inning but ultimately fell in a 7-6 heartbreaker after two extra innings.
The game remained scoreless through the first two innings before Olympian broke through with four runs across the third and fourth.
West Ranch responded late, scoring two in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Olympian, facing elimination, tied the game to force extras.
In the ninth, West Ranch again pulled ahead with a run, but Olympian answered once more, tying the game, then walking it off with a second run to seal the win and advance.
The Eagles will now face Point Loma in the Division 3 regional semifinals.
Meanwhile, Trinity Classical Academy’s baseball team had a tougher outing against the Venice Gondoliers in the Division 5 regional tournament.
Venice struck first with a run before Trinity tied things up in the top of the third inning. But the Gondoliers quickly regained control, scoring twice in the bottom of the third and adding two more insurance runs across the following innings. Trinity managed just one more run, falling 5-2.
Venice advances to take on Mt. Carmel in the second round, scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m.
