The airlift happened near Plum Canyon Elementary School, where a 911 caller reported a 2-year-old child in need of urgent medical help due to a seizure just before 9 p.m., according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Spokesperson Ryan Rau.

Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department launched a “critical roll,” working ahead of the ambulance to control traffic and clear intersections to help crews move as quickly as possible.

Firefighters from Station 128 and Squad 104 checked on the child and quickly realized they needed to get them to a higher level of care outside the Santa Clarita Valley. That’s when crews set up a landing zone at the nearby school for Copter 21.

The helicopter landed around 9:27 p.m. on a grass field near the playground as crews got the child ready for the flight.

About 20 minutes later, the toddler and a parent were loaded onto the helicopter and flown to a specialty pediatric hospital in Los Angeles.

The child’s condition has not been released.
