Land Shift Suspected In Castaic Gas Line Rupture

SoCalGas officials say a land shift might have played a factor in the gas line rupture in Castaic.

The official cause of the gas line rupture is still under investigation, but significant land movement was observed at the site, according to an official spokesperson with SoCalGas. A preliminary geological inspection indicates this was the most likely cause of the pipeline break.

The gas line rupture involved a 34-inch natural gas transmission line located north of Northlake Hills Elementary School, between Ridge Route Road and the Interstate 5 Freeway.

Fire officials have confirmed the damaged section of the pipeline was safely isolated Saturday evening, stopping the flow of spewing gas.

SoCalGas crews are now removing the damaged portion of the pipeline and preparing the site ahead of incoming rain. A temporary bypass will be installed to allow normal pipeline operations to continue while permanent repairs are completed.

Utility crews previously mitigated the line from Saugus to approximately 30 miles north of the rupture, significantly reducing any remaining risk. As conditions improved, shelter-in-place orders were lifted, and Interstate 5 has reopened in both directions. One road closure remains in effect: Ridge Route Road is closed from just north of Northlake Hills Elementary School to Templin Highway while crews continue repair work.

There have been no reports of injuries, and officials confirmed there are currently no natural gas service disruptions related to the rupture.

  1. Another way for the utilities to have the blame shifted away from them. I am probably a mile away as the bird flies and the gas smell was horrible in my backyard, I was afraid that with all that gas smell we would get vaporized, you don’t know what would set it off.
