Areas of Newhall and Saugus are in SoCal Edison’s scheduled rotating power outages Sunday.
Following Friday and Saturday’s outages in Valencia and Saugus, SoCal Edison has declared a warning for areas in Newhall and Saugus for hour-long power outages Sunday.
California Independent System Operator “(CAISO) rotating outages, Stage 3 CAISO Emergencies, become necessary when the state’s electricity reserves have fallen below 1.5% in real time or are unavoidable,” according to SoCal Edison. “CAISO will typically order the state’s investor-owned utilities, including SCE, to reduce electrical load by turning off service immediately.”
Neighborhoods south of Lyons Avenue in Newhall and neighborhoods along Seco Canyon Road in Saugus are two of the listed Santa Clarita areas that “are likely to be shut off during the next CAISO rotating outage.”
power“A rotating outage typically lasts one hour,” according to SoCal Edison. “We manage and rotate the outage across groups of customers throughout the service territory to protect the integrity of our electric system, while limiting the inconvenience to any one customer or community.”

Recently, officials with the ISO issued a Flex Alert for the state of California.
During the Flex Alert, residents are being urged to turn off unnecessary lights, use major appliances before 3 p.m. and after 10 p.m. on Friday, and set their air conditioner thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, according to the California Independent System Operator (ISO).
The National Weather Service predicts the temperatures for Santa Clarita to reach upwards of 108 degrees on Friday, with triple-digits lasting thought the next week, according to David Sweet, a meteorologist with the agency.
“A Flex Alert is a call for consumers to voluntarily conserve electricity when there is a predicted shortage of energy supply, especially if the grid operator needs to dip into reserves to cover demand,” said ISO officials. “When consumers reduce electricity use at critical times, it can prevent more dire emergency measures, including possible power outages.”

The alert is issued by the California Independent System Operator, a nonprofit, public benefit corporation that manages the high-voltage electric grid for 80 percent of California.
A Flex Alert is typically issued in the summer when extremely hot weather pushes up electricity demand. This usually happens in the evening hours when solar generation is going offline and consumers are returning home and switching on air conditioners, lights, and appliances.
