Officials with Southern California Edison (SCE) confirmed Wednesday that they had shut off power to areas in the Santa Clarita Valley, with initial estimates indicating that they would not have power restored until Christmas Day.
Shortly after noon on Wednesday, SCE announced that they implemented Power Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in areas of Canyon Country and the eastern portion of Saugus.
Initial estimates indicate that power may not be restored to these areas until noon on Christmas Day. These estimates are set to be updated throughout the next several days as weather conditions change.
At 3 a.m. Wednesday, SCE officials began monitoring several areas in Canyon Country, Castaic, Val Verde and the northeastern portion of Saugus for the potential implementation of PSPS.
“When forecasts indicate elevated weather conditions, we’ll begin assessing the potential impact to affected areas,” a statement from the SCE website reads. “We’ll analyze historical data to help predict the likelihood of a wildfire occurring, closely monitor weather watch alerts from the National Weather Service, and place incident responders on alert, if needed.”
As of 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, just over 16,000 SCE customers were without power due to the implementation of PSPS. It was unclear how many of those customers were from the Santa Clarita Valley.
A map of the areas under PSPS, as well those being monitored in the Santa Clarita Valley, can be viewed below.

Earlier Wednesday morning, SCE officials began to receive several reports of a power outage throughout Canyon Country, in areas mostly north of Soledad Canyon Road from Whites Canyon Road to Deep Creek Drive.
After investigating these reports, officials estimated that approximately 10,261 SCE customers had been impacted by the Canyon Country power outages.
Reggie Kumar, a spokesperson for SCE, later confirmed that those outages were actually related to PSPS, but were miscatagorized in their Outage Center system.
When a PSPS is instated in any of the monitored areas, SCE officials say that Community Crew Vehicles and Community Resource Centers will be made available to support customers in impacted areas.
“We observe physical distancing practices and provide Customer Resiliency Kits, which include PSPS information, light snacks, water, small resiliency devices, and personal protection equipment,” a statement from the SCE Outage Center site reads.

KHTS Radio Santa Clarita Radio – Santa Clarita News
Please take the following steps to hopefully make the California Public Utilities Commission aware of the hardship we all go through during these shut-offs. If you live in Santa Clarita call Supervisor Barger’s office when your power goes out, call SCE to complain – the complaint will fall on deaf ears, but you have done your due diligence; then when you have power, go to the CPUC website, consumer affairs section and log a complaint there, complete with every hardship you have to go through; no heat, can’t cook, kids can’t attend”school”, can’t work, no water -for those of us with wells, w/o water can’t flush toilets, wash hands etc. If you live in the Acton/Aqua Dulce area contact the Supervisor’s office in Lancaster. Right now SCE does not keep track o ANY complaints about the PSPS, so they can tell the CPUC that these PSPS events do not adversely affect the public. We know otherwise. Do you really think SCE will have people out there turning on power on CHRISTMAS DAY?!? This “event” is suppose to end by Thursday evening so the power should be back on by then. Call and Complain – that is the only way we can get these so-called safety outages suspended. Also call the state and federal reps they need to be involved in this as well. I know the staffers are getting tired of hearing from my family some more folks need to get involved, this is ridiculous.
Merry christmas to you jack wagons too. What about all the food I have that needs to be cooked. If you did your jobs and spend some money on improving your infrastructure people might not have to throw away all the food the just bought, maybe edison should give stimulus packages too. Edison is the most ridiculous RIP off business in the state right there with their boss Newsom. Not sure about this power shut down makes no sense to me, you have no idea how it affects the older folk that need power for special equipment. But you go have your christmas with newsom and laugh your butts off on how your pockets are full of lies and more lies just so you think how powerful you are.. stores are all out of generators but if they had one cant get one because the job loss or dems giving you pennies for your covid relief. Stop shutting power off during the holidays you stupid lousy pile of idiots.
Do you have a brain deficit Bobby G? Sure it’s the Dems causing it. How stupid. Grow up. Quit crying. I have a huge backup generator that powers my whole house. Because I planned 10 years ago. Tru using your brain instead of your mouth and put the blame where it should go. ON YOU! Blame everyone and everything but your lazy unprepared self. Nice and bright at my house Bobby. I blame myself for that. Ho ho ho
@Bobby – wow you not only are a moron, but your a little weird. Edison = bad! Yes correct, and we all agree with that statement, as that is the whole and only problem on this subject today. How in the world did you tie the Dems into this one from Washington D.C. related to Covid relief money. Watch a little too much Fixed News (Fox News) a little to much state propaganda TV, do you? And at least get your facts correct relating to the Dems giving pennies out on the relief package. It’s called “google” and it gives you all the information you need in seconds, at your finger tips regarding the 9 month fight on what McConnell mandated in this 2nd relief bill that ALL companies cannot have lawsuits filed against them from their employees who had Covid. You know lobbyist, big pharma, all the Republican brotherhood that don’t even care about you Bobby (the hardworking little guy) because your not a billionaire. Stop voting AGAINST your own interest dummy.
And we will have to rely on our electric vehicles….
Thanks CA for absolutely nothing. The policies are ludicrous and need proper planning and follow through. Sounds good, sounds hipster, going completely electric. SMH.
HEARTLESS!
Wow. Turnoff a needed basic service because you mismanaged your power grid, leaving people to suffer through cold weather and ruin an already tough Christmas. Great thinking.
Does SCEdison do ANYTHING correctly?
Ya know, our elected officials and public servants have but few real jobs, one of which is to maintain the infrastructure for all of the taxpayers! Since they are too busy lining their bank accounts and aggregating power, they seem to have forgotten this! Why we accept being treated like residents of a third world country is beyond me!
1) Name a single person responsible for this nightmare! If there is any finger-pointing, they all get marched through the streets chased by pitchforks.
2) A plan that will ensure this will never happen again. The plan will NOT include raising taxes and/or cutting services. And if the words “committee” or “review” are mentioned, see step 1.
Yes, I am pissed! It’s time we rise up and let them know!
No more rules! They work for us!
You have no power to shut people electricity for some winds people are working from home. The manager needs to be fired for shutting down people electricity for some winds. The power needs to be on because we have food and on to of that we have covid 19. If the power is not on by tomorrow we are going to sue the city of SCV.
My mom needs a machine for breathing correctly at night, they told her ” better go some where else because won’t be any power soon” this guys suck.
Seriously??? The night before Christmas Eve. We have food to cook. And children along with an elderly who is scared of the dark.
My mom relies on oxygen, which needs electricity! Some notice would’ve been nice. We could have bought a generator or gone to another family members house in another state after her lung cancer surgery. Not sure what Edison is thinking! Hopefully I can start cooking at noon on Christmas Day, since you said power will be on at noon! We will see. Otherwise Santa Clarita Edison Can reimburse me my $400 for Christmas dinner!
Welcome to Communist imprisonment and state slavery!! This is the big government that cares for you under Demoronic power and control!!
I have lived in Canyon country for over 40 years I have had my power turned off more this year than all the previous years combined. This is some lame yes people
at Edison in the pocket s of politicals. AMERICA wake up. This is a monopoly you have no choice. Our elected officials should be ashamed of themselves.when you build something you have codes to live with in why is it different for power company’s if your lines can’t take the wind then something needs to be changed..maintain and up grade your equipment if needed ..your paid billions for a service your not providing. And the government should level fines every time you turn off the power…but that won’t happen cause the politician s are in your pockets
Go get a electric car see how that works for you
This is infuriating! Our power has been shut off 3 times in the past month, and we’re on the watch list now. My kids are behind in school, my husband can’t work without internet, and we don’t have cell reception where we live, so without power, we also have no phone service. This means if a fire does start or my child is choking while the power is out, I can’t even call 911! THAT IS NOT PUBLIC SAFETY!!!
Who decided that our power gets turned off in our neighborhood, but all my neighbors around us don’t – look at the map!! It’s a load of crap. It’s either windy for all or not -Who makes these decisions ?
I just diagnosed Covid 19 positive. I can tolerate my constant coughing but can’t tolerate this power outage for so many hours. This is very inhumane. Can’t take my medication because of no water service and gas service as well. Please help…
Stop freakin’ out, My Dudes. Relax. The electricity is off for a while but our ovens aren’t and so are our BBQ’er too. If you have battery banks… you’re absolutely set!!! A movie or TV show on your tablet with a Bluetooth speaker rocking, drinks/beers in the cooler, steaks on the grill or whatever your vices are… let’s just make the best of it. When the movie ends, turn up the music, enjoy the music. Relax everyone. It’ll be fine. Trust.
I take care of my elderly Mom no stove or oven. You need electricity and no bbq
This is ridiculous Edison fix your lines so you don’t have to shut off power. Because of their negligence we have to pay with no power during wind events.
Stay home for the holidays they say but Edison turns off power to thousands during the holidays. Great thinking by Edison not!!! Thank you Edison for the spoil food for many and the dark holidays. Fix/update your lines instead of making people go with out power for days.
SCE shame on you as this is absolutely ridiculous! This is the 3rd PSPS in 16 days!! How all of a sudden can’t your freakin power lines sustain winds, fix your infrastructure with all the millions you are making off this monopoly. We’ve had stronger winds in the past with no shut offs. Got us living like a 3rd world country in SC!! If we don’t have power then all shouldn’t have power if it’s truly a PSPS…stop the stupidity and restore the power!!
I bet NO executive at SCE is without power. They need to get the lines up to standards so no one has to deal with Shutoffs unless it is an emergency. This is ridiculous ! This has been an issue for a along time now, an issue they should be working on everyday until it’s not an issue. Yes it will cost but so perhaps stop all raises until it’s done !
Edison latest scam is to encourage folks to buy a specific generator and offer a rebate. They made sure Home Depot had 100 of them just in time for power shut off last time. So they make money if power is on or off. They also tend to turn power off in old neighborhoods but not new ones. If you’re a citizen in the homes that started this city, then you are being gentrified out for cookie cutter townhouses since they seem to magically have power while everyone around them doesn’t. Safety has nothing to do with these plans I’ve mentioned . They’re shaking down citizens and I for one plan on moving far away from this city before property values fall. No reliable infrastructure means it’s time to go.
Shutting down the power is not the answer. It makes no sense that out power is off and we are no where near any hills while al the houses on the hill have power. If they need to reroute circuits then do so, they should be also sending out teams with generators to hook people up for an hour to keep food safe. I am working from home now and this is completely upending my job. I’ve had to drive all of mu food to my parents house in orange county twice now in one month. We called edison last night to see what could be done and they told us in not so many words that if we don’t like it, move.
espite the INSANE winds we have had since October they have only shut off the power one other time in the last few months and it was on thanksgiving. This isn’t about safety. This is a political stunt. “Look what happens if we start shutting off the power! See? You don’t want us to do this right?” They want as many people angry as possible. Because they loose money when the power is off.
I appreciate everyone’s comments here – but contact the county supervisor’s office at 661-287-3657 or 661-726-3600, assembly representative Tom Lackey’s office at 661-267-7636, state senator Scott Wilk’s office at 661-286-1471,congressional rep. Mike Garcia’s office at 661-568-4855 or 661-839-0532. Let them all know when your power was turned off and the hardships that you are going through. Go to the California Public Utilities Commission website and make a complaint in the consumer affairs section. SCE does not track complaints about the PSPS events so they can tell the CPUC that residents are not adversely affected by these events. Its not the local lines that have caused fires recently it has been the high voltage transmission lines, specifically the Woolsey Fire, Thomas Fire and the Saddleridge Fire. The Tick Fire was caused by some poor person without power because of PSPS event just trying to cook a meal on a barbecue and the Thief Fire in Techachpie was started when a family was using a generator to power some appliances during a PSPS event. In both cases SCE should carry some or all of the blame. SCE has been “hardening” the lines through Aqua Dulce and Acton yet they continue to turn off the power in those areas; for “Public Safety” what a crock that is. . .
During the last outage, I mentioned to a friend that I could not use the stove because of the electricity being out. He said the gas had nothing to do with the electric. Just use a match to light the burner. It worked fine and I was able to cook while the food was still fresh. Hope this helps.
We are portrayed as a third world country on national news — homelessness, people shooting up drugs on the sidewalk, exploding Covid rates and hospitalizations AND repeated power shut downs. Yet we have among the top high tax rates in this state. This year approximately 135,000 left California for other states.
Yea we are in danger of fire. Like. Moreno its 40 degrees out and its starting to rain in cayoun country fire danger my a hole you better stop this crap we need to get class action law site. So Edison can pay cable and phone and inter net. We have to pay when they shut off power and our food and sick people in our family to move them somewhere safe stop the bull fire danger in December my a hole fix your problem oh send the fire deep home weddont need them yea that makes as much since turning. Off power for fire danger in december
SCE is a complete profit whore that does not maintain their infrastructure. They use any excuse to shutdown our power anytime there’s a breeze even though years ago this was never an issue. Try filing a claim as we had, which we were told the claim will be denied being that it is cheaper since most people will not sure in small claims and let the issue of loss go. SCE is the most unethical company baked by the CPUC, which has no concern for the consumer.
Nonetheless, do not rollover and DO let us be heard.
