Downed power lines sparked a Newhall fire that was extinguished by residents Friday afternoon, officials said.
Around 12:05 p.m. Friday, firefighters received reports of a tree fire near the northbound 5 Freeway and Calgrove Boulevard on Wiley Canyon Road, said Sean Rios, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“Power lines came down into a tree,” Rios said.
By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the blaze had been extinguished, Rios said.
Residents were able to put out the fire, preventing the flames from spreading to the surrounding area, according to Rios.
The ignition source of the fire is suspected to be a blown transformer on the power pole, according to Engineer Mike Stephenson with Station 124.
A power outage followed the downed lines in the Newhall area impacting about 1,800 homes. Restoration for power is estimated to be about 2 p.m. Friday, according to Southern California Edison.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, according to Fire officials.

Way to go Newhall residents!! Thank you!
If only they had turned off the power in Newhall where the equipment is old and not in Agua Dulce where the equipment is brand new then we would not have had the fire…..
