Elsmere Fire Reported Near 14 Freeway In Newhall, Road Closures Lifted

The Elsmere Fire was reported near the 14 Freeway in Newhall Monday afternoon and quickly grew to a third-alarm fire, officials said.

UPDATE (7:45 p.m.): All lanes of the 14 Freeway are now open, with the exception of the southbound right lane from Placerita Canyon Road to Newhall Avenue.

UPDATE (6:15 p.m.): The southbound lanes of 14 Freeway are now open, according to officials with the City of Santa Clarita.

Officials expect lanes on the northbound side of the 14 Freeway to be opened by 7 p.m.

However, the No 3 lane is in both directions is set to remain closed from Newhall Ave. to Golden Valley Rd., and the  Placerita Canyon off ramps are also set to remain closed in both directions.

UPDATE (4:10 p.m.) Forward progress on the Elsmere Fire has stopped at about 130 acres, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Firefighters have reached about 30 percent containment, according to Fire officials.

UPDATE (4:00 p.m.) The Elsmere Fire has been downgraded to 130 acres after Los Angeles County Air Operations helicopters were able to size-up the fire, according to officials with the department.

UPDATE (3:27 p.m.) Sierra Highway is closed to traffic between Newhall Avenue and Golden Valley Road, according to City officials.

UPDATE (3:11 p.m.)
The previous evacuation order has been lifted, according to the new evacuation order is north of Santa Clara Truck Trail, west of Golden Valley Road, east of Newhall Avenue, and south of Railroad Avenue (former Bouquet Canyon Road), according to Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

Additionally, Santa Clarita Transit customers using Route 12 are expected to experience delays in the Newhall area due to the Elsmere fire. Transit officials suggest that those looking to connect between Newhall and Canyon Country please use Routes 5/6.

UPDATE (3:04 p.m.) The Elsmere fire has grown to at least 200 acres in size, with 0% containment, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

UPDATE (2:44 p.m.) A SIGAlert has been issued for the Newhall Pass area due to the Elsmere fire. All lanes of the 14 freeway are blocked at various checkpoints in the area according to the California Highway Patrol. The truck route is closed for an unknown duration.

UPDATE (2:33 p.m.) An evacuation order is in place due to the Elsmere Fire between Dockweiler and Newhall Avenue up to Valle del Oro. There is an evacuation warning for the neighborhood just north of that, according to Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

UPDATE (2:25 p.m.) A third alarm response has been requested to the Elsmere fire in Newhall. All lanes of the northbound 14 Freeway have been closed at Newhall Ave due to the brush fire. Duration of the closure is unknown.


UPDATE (2:17 p.m.)
The Elsmere fire has grown to at least 100 acres in size, with no containment, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department officials.

UPDATE (2:14 p.m.)
An Evacuation Order has been issued for residents and buildings between Dockweiler Dr. and Newhall Ave., and from Sierra Hwy up to Valle de Oro, according to City officials. The 14 freeway is now shut down in both directions.


UPDATE (2:05 p.m.) 
The Elsmere Fire has jumped the 14 Freeway, a 2nd alarm response has been requested. Expect evacuations to be requested from Dockweiler Drive to Valle Del Or, according to City and County officials.

Original Story: Just after 1:30 p.m. Monday, a brush fire was reported near the 14 Freeway and Newhall Avenue in Newhall, according to Los Angeles County Fire officials.

“We received reports that there were flames coming from the hiking trail,” said Leslie Lua with the LACoFD. “It’s at about 3 acres now.”

All northbound lanes of the 14 Freeway are expected to be closed for an unknown duration to allow firefighters to handle the incident.
