Get Prepared For Wildfires With County Of Los Angeles Fire Department Emergency Survival Guide

The Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) has released its annual Emergency Survival Guide online to help people be prepared for the upcoming fire season.

The LACoFD has put together a three-step process for residents to be prepared for when brush fires threaten homes and property.

“The County of Los Angeles Fire Department, along with our partnering agencies, stand ready to quickly respond to contain wildfires, utilizing our firefighting resources from the air and ground to help protect you and your property from wildfire,” said Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone.

There are three steps to take in order to be prepared for the fire season: Ready, Set and Go, according to LACoFD.

The first step is ‘Ready’ which means creating and maintaining defensible space is essential for increasing a homeowner’s chance of surviving fire.

Steps to take to be ready are to remove all dead or dying vegetation, trim trees regularly, create separations between trees, shrubs and items that could potentially catch fire, according to officials.

The next step is ‘Set’ which means having a Wildfire Action Plan must be prepared with all members who live in the same household.

Each household will have a different plan depending on their situation and how many people are living within the household, added officials.

Having a household communication plan that designates an out-of-area friend or relative as a point-of-contact to act as a single source of communication among household members in case of separation.

Also have things such as an emergency kit, an extra set of clothes, an extra set of car keys, credit cards, and cash and other things that are needed.

The third step to being prepared for a fire is ‘Go,’ leave early, know where to go and when to go and how to get out.

By leaving early people have a better chance of surviving a fire which also helps firefighters by keeping roads clear from congestion and enabling them to move more freely.

Having several evacuation routes in case one route is blocked by the fire or by emergency vehicles and equipment and choosing a route that is away from the fire, according to officials.
