In a filing submitted to state utility regulators Thursday, Southern California Edison (SCE) officials stated that the company’s equipment was likely the cause of the Hurst Fire in Sylmar last month.
In the course of its ongoing investigation into the source of the fire, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) suggested that SCE’s equipment sparked the Hurst Fire, stated SCE in a statement filed with the state oversight organization, the California Public Utilities Commission.
“Absent additional evidence, SCE believes its equipment may be associated with the ignition of the Hurst Fire,” read Thursday’s filing.
One of many blazes sparked on Jan. 7 during a devastating Santa Ana wind event, the Hurst Fire was reported at approximately 10:10 p.m. in Sylmar near the I-210 and Yarnell Street, quickly growing to more than 100 acres in size and triggering evacuation orders for nearby neighborhoods.
The Hurst fire would grow to approximately 799 acres in size, and was reported as fully contained on Jan. 16. Two homes sustained damage in the fire, but no destroyed structures, injuries or fatalities were reported.
As of Thursday, LAFD investigating appeared to originate in an area north of Saddle Ridge Road near a SCE transmission tower, notated as Tower 6 in the filing.
In the report, SCE stated that the hardware supporting the insulator string, the device used to suspend high tension wires from transmission towers while keeping the power lines away from the metallic structure, “separated” and caused the power lines suspended at the top level to fall on powerlines suspended on the middle level, resulting in both top and bottom segments to fall to the ground.
SCE has since repaired the damage to Tower 6, including the replacement of additional hardware and wiring on adjacent towers in the same circuit. All material has been retained for evidence, though the cost of damages has not yet been calculated according to the filing.
The cause of the Hurst Fire remains under investigation by the LAFD as of Thursday, and SCE plans to continue cooperating with investigators. Edison International has committed $1 million to community-based organizations to support relief efforts and assist those affected by the wildfires.
In a second filing, SCE also noted that it is looking into reports that its equipment possibly sparked the deadly 14,021 acre Eaton Fire in Altadena and Pasadena on Jan. 7.
Multiple lawsuits have already been filed against SCE on behalf of victims. A cause has not yet been determined by investigators.
The Eaton Fire killed at least 17 people and destroyed thousands of structures, with a search for human remains ongoing as clean-up efforts attempt to tally the damage. A cause has not yet been determined for the 23,707-acre Palisades Fire, which started the morning of Jan. 7, killed at least 12 people and destroyed more than 6,800 structures.
