Sheriff’s officials called for the evacuation of Arcadia Street between Lyons Avenue and 8th Street immediately after the fire was reported, shortly before 2:15 p.m., near the intersection of Newhall Avenue and 9th Street. The fire was dubbed the “Newhall Fire” by first responders.

Residents of the Newhall Terrace apartment complex told KHTS reporters on scene that they were eating lunch when they saw smoke coming from behind the complex, prompting some residents to grab fire extinguishers and battle the blaze until fire officials arrived.

Firefighters on scene reported a ⅛ acre fire burning on the hillside behind the Newhall Terrace apartment complex, burning up the hill.

But at 2:34 p.m., firefighters reported forward progress of the blaze had stopped. Nobody was injured by the fire.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, residents told a KHTS reporter that the burn area is commonly used by people to smoke.
