Expert On Pest Control In Santa Clarita Warns Solar Panel Owners: Beware Of Pigeons

An expert on pest control in Santa Clarita warns that pigeon infestations can become big problems very quickly for owners of roof-mounted solar panels.

Cardon Ellis from Unipest explained that pigeons find the space beneath these solar panels perfect for building nests, leaving owners to deal with the noise and mess the birds generate.

“I’m getting a lot of this lately, especially in Stevenson Ranch, parts of Lost Canyon,” said Ellis. “Those guys have these solar panels crammed on the roof into every nook and cranny. And the way they’re elevated, that little six-inch elevator is the perfect distance to make pigeons feel comfortable.”

Ellis emphasized that initially residents might not realize they have a pigeon infestation. Because modern home construction insulates living spaces from the noise the birds make on the roof, many residents fail to notice the birds until 20 or more birds have made their roost beneath roof-mounted panels.

“At first, when it’s small and there’s only a couple of pigeons, you don’t really hear it because the tile roof provides insulation (and) the sound has to go through the attic,” Ellis explained.

The real problems start to arise once more pigeons catch wind of the housing opportunities residents’ solar panels provide. As more birds move in, the noise and mess begins to multiply. The first sign many residents notice is the sound of scratching from the birds sandwiched tightly between the panels and roof tiles.

“When all of a sudden there’s 20 or 30 of them, … people will think there’s raccoons and stuff like that, and they’ll call me thinking it’s (maybe) wildlife,” Ellis said.

Even though pigeons may seem harmless compared to larger pests like raccoons, Ellis warns that they can still damage a home’s exterior, and create “filthy” conditions with their eggs and nests.
