In the days following two major earthquakes in Searles Valley that were felt throughout the SCV, a Santa Clarita solar company is raising awareness about an option they offer that provides battery-powered electricity during a power outage.

“Earthquakes present a threat to the electrical grid, just like a lot of other things,” said Mike Terry, founder of HomeLink Pros Solar in Canyon Country.

Other possible causes of power outages can include wildfires, heat waves that create too much demand for electricity, intentional precautionary blackouts by the electric company to prevent wildfires during high winds and even cyber threats, according to Terry.

“China and Russia have both hacked into our electrical grid at times and have had the capability to shut our grid down, and haven’t done so,” Terry said. “We have three grids in the United States, and the number of things that can impact those is growing.”

While traditional solar installations cannot protect homeowners against power outages, new technology is available that allows the Santa Clarita solar company to integrate a solar-charged battery as a backup power source during an outage, according to Terry.

“What that typically does is it lets a homeowner use their plugs, their lights, their refrigerator, those types of things, for a sustained period,” he said. “The solar charges the battery back up each day.”

While a traditional solar system would create immediate cost savings in a homeowners’ electric bill, Terry noted that those who opt for the battery backup option will typically apply those savings toward the battery instead.

“The savings that somebody would normally see in the way of cheaper solar power goes towards the paying off of that battery,” he said. “So typically a homeowner in Santa Clarita can get solar powered energy for their home and backup power to run their lights and plugs on a sustained basis for about the same amount they’re paying for their (current) energy bill.”
