Every year, the Chili Cook Off raises money for the Special Olympics, offering tastes of more than two dozens chilis  for the community to come out and enjoy.

The LASD collaborates with the Southern California Special Olympics to organize and host the Chili Cook-off.

The event expects to offer an goulash of activities for the whole family to savor, according to Sheriff’s Department officials. In addition to the activities, the cook off will offer over 25 chili chefs competing to be No. 1.

At the feast, families will be able to play in the Kid’s Zone, hear live music, browse vendor booths, and interact with military and LASD equipment.

Last year, chili fans were able to fire simulated police rounds, sit at the controls of a sheriff’s helicopter and climb aboard a prisoner transport bus.

“Many offices and bureaus within law enforcement participate in one of the biggest charity events for the Special Olympics.” said media relations Deputy Fanny Lapkin.

This year’s cook-off will feature a classic car show for the car enthusiast and games for all ages.

“This has always been one of our favorite events,” said Laura Mayo, Special Olympics, Assistant Vice President, for Field Operations. “It truly has something for everyone in the family.”

Mayo has been helping with organizing the cook-off for nine years running.

Tasting cards are available for children and adults to sample and vote for their favorite chili recipe.

In 2016, the sheriff’s Homicide Department won the competition and took the title of “Best Chili.”

Sponsorship opportunities are also available with six levels of donations, giving the donor different amenities to relish.

Proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics of Southern California to support athletes expenses in the upcoming olympics.

This year, the Special Olympics expect to have about 2,000 registered athletes who are eagerly training to compete in 12 games.

The feast will take place at the Jack Bones Equestrian Center in Castaic, on October 14 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm and is free to the public.
