A neurosurgeon gets up in the middle of the night to operate 6 hours on a patient with head trauma and gets payed nothing from the insurance company. Two cardiothoracic doctors spend 12 hours saving the life of an emergently admitted HMO patient with an aortic aneurysm, and are paid less than minimal wage for their expertise and service. And a cancer surgeon accepts a case turned down by nearby teaching hospitals because of high-risk, positively shifting the prognosis giving the patient and family hope.
These are heroes at our hospital whose courage, character, and sense of responsibility uphold the ideals of the practice of medicine where they did not flinch from their duties.
Therefore, I will not flinch in revealing their names: Dr. Mark Liker, Drs. Farshad Malekmehr and Mehdi Fakhrai, and Dr. Yih-Dar Nien.
