Bear Cub Struck, Killed On 14 Freeway

A bear cub was killed after being struck by two cars on the 14 Freeway Monday morning.

Around 5 a.m. Monday, officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) received reports that a vehicle had struck a bear cub on the southbound 14 Freeway near Soledad Canyon Roads, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.

“It was determined that a vehicle crashed into a young bear,” Greengard said. “The bear continued over the center median wall where it was struck by an unknown northbound vehicle. The bear was located on the right shoulder of SR-14 NB south of Soledad Canyon Road, and was confirmed deceased.”

The initial vehicle that hit the bear was temporarily disabled due to the crash, according to Greengard.

CHP did not report any injuries to the involved drivers.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
