Man Charged With Felony DUI After Causing Fatal Crash In Newhall

A Simi Valley Man was charged with felony DUI after a Newhall man was killed in a crash on the 5 Freeway Sunday morning.

Around 2 a.m. Sunday, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were investigating a single vehicle  crash on the northbound 5 Freeway south of Calgrove Boulevard in Newhall before being notified of a second collision that occurred behind them, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.

“While stopped with the initial crash, the CHP officers were flagged down and advised of a crash approximately 200 feet behind their location,” Greengard said.

CHP officers responded and located the crash with individuals suffering from  major injuries and rendered aid, according to Greengard.

“It was determined a sedan stopped behind a big rig as all traffic was slowing and stopped. While stopped a pickup truck crashed into the back of the sedan, causing the sedan to crash into the rear of the big rig,” Greengard said.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire  Department arrived on scene and pronounced the passenger of the sedan, Clay Rodriguez, 34, from Newhall  deceased on scene, according to Greengard.

“The driver of the sedan was transported to Henry Mayo,” Greengard said.

The driver of the pick up truck, Gary Palmas Sanchez, 30 from Simi Valley, was arrested for Felony DUI and booked into the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
