A man was found decomposed and in a “state of prolonged exposure” Sunday in a vehicle registered to a missing person after a reported crash off Sierra Highway, officials said.
On June 28, at about 3:22 p.m., the California Highway Patrol received a call regarding a Honda Civic with a solo male occupant deceased located approximately 60 feet off the roadway into a heavy bush area on Sierra Highway, north of The Old Road, according to Officer Josh Greengard with the CHP Newhall Area Office.
A registration check on the vehicle which returned to a missing person from May 22, whose name has not been released, according to CHP officials.
The age and identity of the driver are still pending, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as of Monday morning.
“Right now, we have the decedent listed as a Caucasian male,” said Sara Ardalani, spokesperson for the office.
It was determined the Honda was traveling southbound on Sierra Highway, north of The Old Road, at an unknown speed, according to CHP investigators.
“The driver of the Honda failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and veered off the roadway into a wood/bush area striking a tree,” Greengard said.
The date and time of the collision are unknown, according to the CHP.
A male occupant was found in the driver’s seat decomposed and in a state of prolonged exposure, said Greengard.
“Speed is a factor in this collision and the driver was not properly wearing his seat belt,” Greengard said.
The driver’s impairment is unknown and pending toxicology through the Los Angeles County Coroner, according to CHP officials.
