The man who died in the hospital four days after a fiery rollover crash on the 5 Freeway in Newhall last week has been identified.
At approximately 3:25 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, Newhall Area California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a call regarding a crash on the northbound 5 Freeway north of Calgrove Boulevard in Newhall, according to Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol.
Newhall Area units responded to the scene and located two vehicles that had been involved in a crash.
A black infinity had overturned and become engulfed in flames. A good Samaritan stopped to assist and help the driver out of his vehicle.
The driver, Alan Franco, suffered major injuries from the crash and fire and was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. The second vehicle involved sustained moderate damage and was able to be driven from the scene, according to Burgos-Lopez.
On Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025, at 9:12 am, Franco succumbed to his injuries at the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in San Bernardino County, and was pronounced deceased by medical personnel.
“This tragic crash serves as a solemn reminder of how quickly lives can be lost on our roadways. Our thoughts are with Mr. Franco’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” said Lt. Yochim, Acting Commander, CHP Newhall Area Office.
Franco was the sole occupant of his vehicle, and no additional injuries were reported by the second vehicle.
There were reports that the driver of the overturned vehicle had been racing a motorcycle prior to the crash.
The cause of this crash is still under investigation. Witnesses are encouraged to call the CHP Newhall Area Office at (661)600-1600, ask for Officer Nichols.
