One person was killed and another person was taken to the hospital in critical condition Tuesday evening after a head-on collision on Sierra Highway in Agua Dulce.

Investigators said the crash happened on the two-lane stretch of Sierra Highway when one driver attempted to pass other vehicles going northbound and crossed over double yellow lines, entering oncoming traffic. Two vehicles then collided head-on, leaving the man who attempted to pass dead at the scene.
The other driver who was driving southbound on Sierra Hwy had to be extricated from their Toyota RAV4 and was transported to a nearby hospital in critical but stable condition, according to Firefighter Paramedic Chad Chebbi with Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Witnesses told officers with California Highway Patrol (CHP) the vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic appeared to be traveling over 70 miles per hour, possibly faster.
“When you’re driving canyon roads, you have to be very careful,” said Officer E. Suva with CHP. “People get impatient and try to pass where they shouldn’t. In areas like this with solid double yellow lines, you’re not supposed to be passing at all. It’s better to arrive a little late than to not get to your destination at all.”
Suva said there was only one occupant in each vehicle at the time of the crash.
The man who died in the crash was identified as Everett Turner, 54, from Canyon Country, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
