A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle in a Castaic crash Thursday evening.
Around 9 p.m. Thursday, first responders received reports of a crash on Castaic Road north of Lake Hughes Road, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Area Office.
A resident of Bakersfield was walking northbound on the shoulder of Castaic Road south of the 5 Freeway over-cross, Greengard said.
For unknown reasons, the pedestrian began crossing the southbound lane of Castaic Road, entering the northbound lane directly into the path of an oncoming vehicle traveling around 30 mph, according to Greengard.
The driver was unable to take any evasive action and struck the pedestrian with the left front of his vehicle, causing the victim to travel through the front windshield, according to Greengard.
The victim was then ejected back onto the roadway as the driver came to a stop. The pedestrian came to rest within the northbound lane.
“Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the scene and rendered aid to both (parties),” Grengard said.
Both the driver and pedestrian were transported to the hospital with major injuries, according to Greengard.
At 9:45 p.m. the pedestrian was pronounced deceased by Henry Mayo Hospital Emergency Room doctors.
Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in the crash.
The identity of the pedestrian has not been released.
