Saugus High School Student Dies In Northern California Crash

A Saugus High School senior died after being struck by a vehicle in Northern California the day before Thanksgiving.

Around 4:40 a.m. Wednesday Nov. 27, Samuel Grumet, 17, a Saugus High School student was struck and killed by a vehicle on the southbound Interstate 680 near Crow Canyon Road in Northern California, said Officer Tyler Hahn, spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Dublin Area Office.

“The initial arriving CHP unit located a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and the pedestrian within the #3 lane of southbound I-680,” Hahn said. “Upon arrival, the 17-year-old was pronounced dead on scene.”

Preliminary information reveals that a 63-year-old driver from Richmond was driving her 2024 Subaru Crosstrek at approximately 60-65 miles per hour when a pedestrian came from the right shoulder of I-680 southbound, into her lane of travel, according to CHP reports.

The driver of the Subaru applied the brakes to her vehicle but was unable to stop.

“Samuel Grumet will be greatly missed by his Centurion family,” said Geni Peterson Henry, principal for Saugus High School. “His bright smile and friendly personality lit up our campus. He was a wonderful student and an all-around good person. Grief counseling is being provided for staff and students as we deal with this heartbreaking loss.”

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
