As lane closures for the roadway rehabilitation project continues on the I-5, construction of a new bridge at LAX will result in 15 full nights of closure on the 405 freeway.

Metro announced on Monday that 15 full nights of partial and full directional closures of the 405 freeway, near Los Angeles International Airport, are coming due to a new bridge being built for the Crenshaw/LAX Line light rail project.

For residents who plan on traveling to LAX, the closures are set to begin on July 31 and will last until August 18. The freeway will be fully open during the weekends, but on Monday through Friday, the freeway will experience full or partial directional closures from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

On July 31, the northbound lanes will be completely closed between Century and La Tijera boulevards until August 4. Partial closures of the northbound and southbound high occupancy vehicle lanes and the 1 and 2 lanes are planned from August 7 to August 11. Lastly, starting on August 14, the southbound lanes will be fully closed between the La Cienega off-ramp and La Tijera on-ramp until August 18.

Residents should also take into consideration the I-5 Roadway Rehabilitation Project, that is currently happening in Santa Clarita, when traveling.

The roadway rehabilitation project will repair and replace the pavement on nearly 16 miles of I-5 from Route 14 (the Antelope Valley Freeway) to north of Lake Hughes Road in northern Los Angeles County.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) began the project on July 10 and is expected to finish at the end of summer 2019.

Much of the work will be done at night, requiring some lane closures on most weeknights. Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., at least two freeway lanes will be kept open for traffic in the work zone, except midnight to 4 a.m. when at least one lane will be open for traffic.

Caltrans will paint temporary lines with lower speed limits, typically around 50 or 55 mph. Drivers are advised by Caltrans to be alert and drive defensively.

The schedule is subject to change and weather-permitting. Future updates about construction activity and more information about the I-5 North County/Santa Clarita Valley pavement rehabilitation project will be available from Caltrans online.

Caltrans reminds drivers to “Be Work Zone Alert” and “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
