Additional SCV Water Well Found In Excess Of State PFAS Notification Level

SCV Water’s November 2019 quarterly well sampling of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) found one additional well in excess of the state’s nonregulatory notification levels, officials said Thursday.

This well is in addition to 28 wells identified during the previous rounds of sampling in May and August 2019.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) are two chemicals within a class of chemicals known as PFAS.

“Like many communities across the nation, small amounts of PFAS have shown up in some of our water supply. We have a treatment facility that will be online by summer, and we will continue to seek the best strategies to attack this issue,” said SCV Water General Manager Matt Stone. “Our customers are our top priority, and we are committed to rigorously testing our water thousands of times per year to ensure it meets or surpasses all water-quality standards and is safe to drink for our customers.”

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of manmade chemicals that are prevalent in the environment and were commonly used in industrial and consumer products to repel grease, moisture, oil, water and stains.

These chemicals enter the environment through treated wastewater discharge, landfills and areas where the substances were used outdoors. Exposure to these chemicals may cause adverse health effects.

In August 2019, the State Water Resources Control Board – Division of Drinking Water (DDW) updated state guidelines and lowered the notification levels by more than half, to 6.5 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOS and 5.1 ppt for PFOA, making them some of the most stringent guidelines in the nation, according to officials.

For perspective, one part per trillion is a microscopic measurement for something in the water and would be equal to four grains of sugar in an Olympic-size swimming pool.

Notification levels are a nonregulatory, precautionary reporting level for concentrations in drinking water that warrant notification and further monitoring and assessment.

When water registers above the notification level in Santa Clarita, it is reported to the DDW, as well as the SCV Water governing board, the Santa Clarita City Council and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors within 30 days of official results from the testing laboratory, officials said.

Results were presented to the SCV Water Board on Jan. 7, 2020. Customers are notified through SCV Water’s annual Consumer Confidence (Water Quality) Report as well as the agency’s website and e-newsletter. Additionally, all 73,000 of SCV Water’s customer accounts are expected to receive a direct mail postcard this month with information about PFAS.

“We are committed to transparently communicating all water quality changes and how we plan to address them with our customers,” Stone said.

SCV Water continues to monitor its groundwater supplies through proactive quarterly sampling and will rely on its diverse water supply portfolio, including imported and banked water sources, in order to minimize any supply impacts to its customers, according to officials.

SCV Water officials noted they are developing a plan to address the issue. Construction begins this February on a $5 million water treatment facility for three agency wells next to the William S. Hart Baseball/Softball League ballfields.

This project is expected to provide treatment for a substantial portion of groundwater impacted by PFAS chemicals. It will treat up to 6,250 gallons of water per minute – enough to serve more than 5,000 families for a year, officials said.

SCV Water is one of more than 200 water systems in California required to sample for PFOS and PFOA chemicals this year.

  1. Nothing removes this stuff. I agree that “where?” applies. Journalism is more than cut and paste press releases. Question authority, for the relatively powerless.

  2. Soon this will be a good news story in comparison to what is to come following Trump’s attack on the environment with his rescinding of the 50 year old Environmental Policy Protection Act, put in place to keep our air, water and land clean in favor of short-term profits for those who would and will pollute at the expense of us all. We are always stuck with the corporate bill; not just in clean-up costs but this time also our health. Do you understand what he is doing to us? That goes for all, whatever your political lean is. He is killing us for profit.

    • Sorry Danny. This is not a political platform. Get over.

      • You would be well served by learning reading comprehension skills.
        First, I’m Denny, not Danny.
Secondly, I made it quite clear this is an environmental issue, not political.
        Get over what? (noun missing)

Now, a few questions now for you, ceebee-
Are you in favor of industrial, commercial and public pollution of our natural resources?
Does having a D or R behind the name of those polluters make it any more safe or deadly?
Do you understand the seriousness of this?
Is this nothing more than a team sport to you?

        • Why don’t you start with the chem trails that are being sprayed on us nearly every day? Go research that. If you have half a brain, you will realize what’s going on. Or just look up at tbd sky. Not normal. Not clouds. Not contrails but CHEMTRAILS.

  3. The newest well is V207 out by Magic mountain, the first well was Valley Center close to where Golden Valley Road crosses the Santa Clara River (south side) Both wells have been closed. You can find this information in the agendas of the Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency which are on line. I agree that at least the general vicinity of the wells should have been disclosed in the story, but the agency didn’t disclose it in their press release (that was in the Signal), so the reporter would have had to do some research.

  4. Sorry, not having any sympathy for the water company out here…seems they have no problem raising our water rates excessively in order to pay for their lost revenue from us conserving water during the drought and they suck at maintaining good water quality. Now this crap* is discovered in some unknown well? What else don’t we know?

  5. This issue requarding our water has been a terrible problem for many many years. I dont drink it at all.

  6. Destruction of our habitat is an issue that transcends politics. This is a war on nature being conducted by clearly delusional folks who think financial gains prove they are doing good things. Sickos.
