“Extreme weather” is in the Santa Clarita forecast for Labor Day weekend, with temperatures expected to reach up to 114 degrees on Sunday.
Due to the triple digits, a Flex Alert has been put in place from Saturday Sept. 5 lasting through Monday Sept. 7, and a cooling center has been set up at Stevenson Ranch Library.
During the Flex Alert, residents are being urged to turn off unnecessary lights, use major appliances before 3 p.m. and after 10 p.m. and set their air conditioner thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, according to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO).
“A Flex Alert is a call for consumers to voluntarily conserve electricity when there is a predicted shortage of energy supply, especially if the grid operator needs to dip into reserves to cover demand,” said ISO officials. “When consumers reduce electricity use at critical times, it can prevent more dire emergency measures, including possible power outages.”

Cooling centers are free, indoor air-conditioned locations where residents can keep cool when there are extreme heat weather conditions. Social distancing measures are expected to be in place, with masks required.
Los Angeles County Public Health issued an extreme heat warning for Labor Day weekend.
“Public Health reminds everyone to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness, especially older adults, young children, outdoor workers, athletes, and people with a chronic medical condition who are especially sensitive to negative health impacts from extreme heat,” reads the official statement.
The high temperature for Santa Clarita is expected to reach 104 degrees on Friday, with the forecast for Saturday up to 113 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
