In just one week, California’s drought has eased significantly due to abundant rain, with Santa Clarita included in the impacted area.
According to the latest data available from the U.S. Drought Monitor, between Dec. 21 and Dec. 28, drought conditions in Santa Clarita and most of Los Angeles County decreased from extreme drought to severe drought.
The U.S. Drought Monitor rates droughts based on five levels of severity. D0 indicates abnormally dry conditions, D1 indicates moderate drought, D2 indicates severe drought, D3 indicates extreme drought and D4 means there is an exceptional drought.

Before this week, Santa Clarita was in an extreme drought, meaning water levels were low and there was likely not enough water available to supply the community, wildlife and agriculture.
Now, Santa Clarita is in moderate drought, meaning reservoir levels are likely low and water temperatures may be higher than they should be.
In a map dating back to Sept. 28, Santa Clarita looked to be in an area of exceptional drought, meaning that in the past three months our valley has dropped from a D4 to D2 level drought.

Back in December of 2020, the drought in Santa Clarita was actually slightly less severe than it is at the same time this year. At that point, the valley was at moderate drought levels.
