In addition to the excessive heat warning, a red flag warning has also been put into place through Saturday evening in the Santa Clarita Valley, said Mike Worfford, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
While red flag conditions are typically tied into winds, this event is due to the elevated heat, according to officials.
“We are not really focussing on the winds but the temperatures,” Wofford Said.
Santa Clarita saw similar conditions this time of year back in 2020, and had “large fires” without a lot of wind, Wofford said.
After comparing this year to the past, officials with the NWS felt it was appropriate to go with a “forecaster’s discretion” red flag warning instead of a traditional red flag warning that focuses more on wind and not temperatures.
Humidity levels are also expected to drop down to around 10 percent, according to officials.
As of Friday, the red flag warning is expected to expire Saturday evening, while warmer than normal temperatures are set to last until Monday.
