365 crashes were reported between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. across Los Angeles County on Thursday, according to the officials with the California Highway Patrol.

The number of crashes Thursday morning was more than triple the number of 93 crashes that occurred in the same time frame on Wednesday.

Rainfall across Los Angeles County produced the dangerous road conditions that drove the increase in crashes, according to officials.

“Obviously, whenever it rains, specifically the first rain, there’s always an uptick in vehicular collisions,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Priessman.

The Santa Clarita Valley received 1.5 to 1.85 inches of rainfall yesterday according to the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works.

These conditions resulted in increased commute times for many Santa Clarita residents, whose commute has already been impacted by the increased traffic from construction on Interstate 5 from the Newhall Pass to the Grapevine, according to officials.

While the rain has subsided for the time being, drivers can expect a high likelihood of wet conditions once again on Wednesday, with a 90 percent chance of rain reported by The Weather Channel on Saturday.

“It’s important to plan ahead to allow yourself extra time and even more important that people slow down,” Priessman said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s currently raining or it has recently stopped, it takes drivers time to adjust their driving patterns to the conditions.”

In addition to slowing down for rainy conditions, CHP officials recommend that drivers turn on their vehicle’s headlights during the rain, as well as leaving extra space between their vehicle and the one ahead of them.
